Old

Chris, Franco, and Jonathan (all recovering from illness) share one-minute reviews: Chris critiques Ted Lasso’s unfocused season, likes Lanterns more as it continues, enjoys The Paper season 2 but dislikes its non-finale ending and recycled Office plots, notes Solar Opposites’ Netflix pickup, praises Dark Matter, and finds Demon Slayer’s season structure convoluted; he enjoyed the new video-game-based Resident Evil for its body-horror/comedy mix but calls the new Scary Movie “garbage.” Jonathan raves about Sinners (Ryan Coogler; Michael B. Jordan as twins), praising its genre shift, music, visuals, and performances. They discuss news: settlements clearing Paramount Skydance’s $110B acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery with theatrical-output conditions, Netflix using AI Gene Wilder’s voice for a Willy Wonka reality show, and JustWatch launching its own streaming service. Main review covers M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, debating premise, dialogue/exposition, aging/logic issues, and the pharma-twist ending; scores: Franco 55, Jonathan 60, Chris 85. Next picks: Matilda (January) and Rubber (next episode).

Movie News:

Paramount Skydance has reached settlements with California and other states that had sued to stop its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, clearing the major remaining legal obstacle to the merger. Reuters

Netflix is using an AI-generated recreation of Gene Wilder’s voice as part of its Willy Wonka-themed reality competition. Wilder died in 2016. His estate approved the use, and Netflix says the synthetic voice was trained from Wilder’s performance in the 1971 film. The Verge

JustWatch, the service people use to figure out which streaming service has the movie they want to watch, announced that it’s launching its own streaming service in October.  Variety
